Note: All IV sedative analgesic medications utilized in procedural sedation should be given over 60
seconds. The time interval for giving a subsequent dose or another medication will depend on the time to reach maximum effect of the first dose. The minimum approximate times to maximum effect for the most commonly utilized agents are listed below. The flow charts reflect these time intervals.
Broselow-Luten System™ General Guidelines IV
Minimal waiting time before adding additional medication or another
dose of the same medication are given below (time begins after 60 second
administration time). From a practical point of view, testing for adequacy
of sedation or analgesia can commence earlier in the waiting
range. If desired effect is judged as adequate at that time, no further
medication need be added. The desired effect should not be judged
inadequate (thus requiring the addition of more medication) until the full
waiting period has been observed.
- Fentanyl and Propofol 1-2 minutes
- Midazolam and Ketamine 2-3 minutes
- Pentobarbital and Morphine 5 minutes
